August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month 0 comments

As summer draws to a close and students head back to school, it is important to remember that even though they are not being used as frequently, pools still present a drowning hazard to children.

Drowning is a year-round problem that requires year-round vigilance. This time of year, attention often shifts from summer fun and recreation to school and work. It is even more important now to renew your dedication to keeping your kids safe around water. Drowning is a 12-month problem, not just a summer problem.

Here are some water safety reminders that can help keep you and your family safe.

BLOCK: Make sure you have barriers in place around your pool. They should include a self-closing, self-latching gate. Also, make sure patio furniture and toys cannot be moved against the fence by children so they can climb over.

WATCH: Constant eye-to-eye supervision of all swimmers is truly the only way to prevent a drowning. Keep an eye on children around other sources of water such as dog water dishes and buckets or pails. Remember, all bodies of water are dangerous.

LEARN: Have all non-swimmers take swimming lessons. Knowing how to swim will not make them drown-proof, but it will provide the skills necessary to help themselves until another person can help them out of the water. Learn CPR; it can mean the difference between life and death.
